The Life of a Future Teacher

Because in order to teach writing, I must be a writer myself…

we thought we got away… March 31, 2008

Our school has this awful horrible really mean i guess kind of fun tradition where all the other classes prank the juniors during junior ring week. It was Thursday night, and my roommate, suitemates and I were discussing how lucky we were to have gotten away without getting pranked during the week.

I guess we spoke too soon…

On Friday morning, I came back from the gym to find newspaper shreddings EVERYWHERE! ALL over the floor, in all my drawers, in my closet, in my bathrobe pockets, my jean pockets, our sink, the medicine cabinet, the fridge, my bed, and even my pillow case! It was actually pretty funny, except for the fact that we are STILL swimming in newspaper shreddings, even after cleaning them all up! We found the culprit, who thought it was the funniest thing ever. She told us that she wanted to take a picture of us on Friday night, and of course we complied. We were sitting on my bed cheesing, when instead of taking out a camera, she pulled out silly string. So now, silly string and newspaper. Everywhere. So disgusting. I guess it was nice to be remembered though, and I guess it was all out of love :)

Except on Sunday morning when I was leaving for brunch and my hand stuck to the door knob….maple syrup. Clever.

no news is good news? March 27, 2008

i guess. this week has been pretty uneventful, especially since all the kids on spring break…meaning no practicum OR babysitting! i have gotten to sleep in past 6:30 every morning this week, AND have had time to go to the gym every single day! and benchsitting has had an all time high! it has really been nice. i just can’t get used to it though, because the craziness starts again on monday! ahh!

in other news…

-i got a second job this summer! (piano teacher!!)

-unc is about to show everyone what march madness is all about!

-baseball is starting so soon!

-i am going to be a freaking senior soon! (we registered for classes yesterday…)

-junior ring week has been pretty sweet

-i LOVE spring weather!

completely overwhelmed March 16, 2008

We went to the Green Valley Book Fair on Saturday, and I have NEVER been overwhelmed in my life!

There were SO many books! Everywhere! All kinds of books! It was amazing! I did not spend over $5.25 on a single book, which originally cost $23.00. It was so beautiful!

And now it is bedtime.

wannabe! March 13, 2008

Filed under: 5th grade, beast, beastest, compliment, learning center, tuck everlasting — learningtoteach @ 8:36 pm

Today I presented my students with a Learning Center, dealing with Tuck Everlasting. I made the learning center into a waterfall–trying to be creative with the spring of everlasting life in the story! Anway, students are supposed to go to this Learning Center with a partner, and have the option of writing a story, writing a newspaper article, creating a Venn Diagram, creating a story map, or creating a board game. I gave them all kinds of art supplies to use.

Everything went so well! They were so excited about the center and talking to each other about what they wanted to do! I was really happy that they seemed interested. When I was leaving, I got hugs from six fifth graders. Fifth graders! Aren’t they supposed to hate their teachers?! It was pretty sweet.

And. I got the most amazing quote of my career so far. Brace yourself.

“Miss D, you are the BEASTest wannabe teacher ever!”

Just look at that for a minute. Not BESTest…BEASTest. As in, I’m a beast. I guess that’s a compliment?

I love fifth grade.

Spring Break! March 10, 2008

was not very springy at all! it was so freezing all week!

my mom and sister and i went to the shore though, and got to see my grandma and aunt for a little girls weekend which was nice :)

and then i was a substitute teacher all break…which gave way to some pretty good stories!

in 4th grade one day, i was speaking spanish to one of the esl kids. the other kids were impressed that i knew spanish, and i told them that it was really important to learn other languages. later on in the day, they were working on sign language and we played sign language hangman, and one little boy raised his hand and said “miss d, you know spanish AND sign language? what? do you have your PhD?!” it was pretty cute!

in one school they had reached their reading goal, and so they brought in daisy, the national “reading pig” and there was this huge assembly. all the teachers (including my reluctant self) had to wear pig noses, and then the principal had to kiss the pig! i was SO glad i wasn’t subbing for the principal that day!!

i got to deal with my first bloody nose, and all of the chaos it entailed. i was actually quite proud of myself for that one, usually i would have been freaking out at the mere sight of blood, but i must say that i handled it quite well!

we had a girl cryyyyying, hysterically, because “she has my birfday pencil! i know it was mine! it was in my desk.” yeah, i handled that one well too, “oh hey look, this pencil has a point at BOTH ends! wouldn’t that be cool to use?” that stopped the crying.

and finally. a card “you are the best subsatoot ever!” precious.
